My fortress and my rock

Updated: Nov 16, 2020

"I will build my life upon your love. It is a firm foundation. I will put my trust in you alone and I will not be shaken." - Pat Barrett

This is what I want my life motto to be. This is how I want to live. Because I know that to live for any other thing than Christ, is foolishness. I know that everything else in this world we strive for- results in emptiness, temporary gain but ultimately eternal loss.

So often we look for fulfillment in many places, but let's just be honest the world can leave us disappointed, empty, or craving for more. There is one who will never fail us. There is one we can rely on, who will never let us down. His name is Jesus: the ultimate Savior, Creator, Redeemer, Friend, Rock, and Refuge for our life.

"I love you, Oh Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

I call to the Lord who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies.

The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me.

In my distress, I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. (Psalm 18: 1-6)

This Psalm is a song of praise, David is singing because God has been His rock and fortress. God has delivered him from the lions, from the wolves, and from evil men. God has done good things for David and David knows that truly it is for God alone that He is safe.

What has God done for you, that He should be praised for? Have you ever been in a situation that was terrible and God saved you from that? Where has God been taking you lately? Has he led you from the valley of death to the beautiful mountaintop?

Oh taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man who trusts in Him. Psalm 34:8

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." Matthew 7:24-26

In our life today, the only foundation that will never fail us is the Word of God. If we build our life on what God says about us and the foundations of His truth, then when life gets hard, when the storms of life come, we will endure. If we put our trust in temporary pleasures and things of this world, when life gets hard we will break. But if we can put our trust in God's word, if we can rely on God to save us despite every situation. When the storms of life come, we will survive and endure, because of our faith and love in God.
